View Original Scanned Handout (PDF)

Prepare and Center the Steering

  1. Get front wheels perfectly straight.
  2. Remove drag link from Pitman arm (let it hang down if necessary).
  3. Center the steering wheel — absolute center. Turn lock to lock, count turns and mark with masking tape if needed, then turn back halfway — about 2 5/8 turns. Double check.
  4. Push Pitman arm front to rear — notice the slack.
  5. Locate adjusting screw — engine side of box, near engine.

Adjust Steering Box Slack

  1. Loosen adjusting screw jam nut (3/4 inch wrench) while holding adjusting screw in exact position with offset screwdriver.
  2. Turn adjusting screw 1/8 turn clockwise.
  3. Check Pitman arm again for slack.
  4. If no slack, go to step 13.
  5. If slack remains, turn adjusting screw another 1/16 turn clockwise.
  6. Check Pitman arm again for slack.
  7. Repeat steps 10 and 11 if needed.

Secure the Adjustment and Reconnect

  1. Put small dab of Permatex Form-A-Gasket #2 (non-hardening) behind jam nut.
  2. Tighten jam nut while holding adjusting screw in exact position with offset screwdriver.
  3. Align drag link to Pitman arm and reattach.
